Open Mic Network Update – July 5th, 2013

openmic

Hi everybody,

Last Wednesdays Open Mic @ The Light proved to Darren and myself that the transition of the community from The Dan to The Light is almost complete.

Even though the weather seemed to be against us, the atmosphere in the front bar was just like what The Dan used to be.

There was a lot of love in the room I can tell you

We had a couple of new faces grace the Open Mic stage last Wednesday. Both were from Melbourne and run the Open Mic Melbourne FB page and were amazing performers in their own right.

First was Connor Mullane and yes you guessed it… With a name like that he’s originally from Ireland. Connor’s songs were wonderful to experience

Next was Emily Brown who got up on stage accompanied by Conner and her voice silenced the room. Awesome stuff :)

New  Open Mic @ The Light Facebook Page To Check Out
I thought it was about time that the Open Mic @ The Light had its own FB page so yesterday I created it and already we’re up to 27 likes already.

The reason why I had left it so long to change pages was that I hoping to be able to just change the name of the Open Mic @ The Dan page but Facebook have really strange rules regarding the changing of page names so it was easier to start the new page and keep the old one for the occasional walk down memory lane

Make sure you get yourself down to the new Open Mic @ The Light FB page and “like” it.

Just a short update this week as I’m feeling a bit time-poor at the moment.

Remember, the Open Mic @ The Brunswick happens this Thursday night October 13th. Can’t wait for that one :)

Australia’s Got Talent Auditions – The Aftermath
I went along to the AGT auditions held at the Adelaide Showgrounds last Saturday (October 8th) and found the experience a very interesting one indeed. As it turns out I dont find out whether I go through to the next phase of the competition until Friday December 16th.

I do however want to thank Kirk Watt and Rarnee Kernick for coming along and having a go. We were able to provide some moral support for each other on a day in which no one really knew what was going on.

Anyways, keep your fingers crossed for us and I’ll let you know what goes on when more news becomes available.

Open Mic Network Update – August 1st, 2011

Hi everybody,

Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was a slower and quieter affair however, we still managed to have a full list of performers playing their hearts out for the audience.

The particularly cold weather we’ve been having didn’t help the cause either.

We did have one new face grace the Open Mic stage and that was Peter Matthews who did a wonderful job for his first time.

Last week was also the week that the 5th SCALA Open Mic Network Songwriter Showcase was held at the Higher Ground Arts Cafe to an intimate, cozy but attentive crowd.

Joining me on the night was Bryan Foley (who took the place of Rarnee Kernick at the last minute), Martin Mount and Steven Fotineas.

Dynamic indigenious artist Krista Pav also played a short spot between acts which was very well received.

All in all, everyone did very, very well and showcased some wonderful songs to the crowd.

Here are some piccies for you all to check out

Open Mic Network Update – April 18th, 2011

Hi everybody

Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was one of welcoming returns for a couple of Open Mic’ers after long absences.

They were Kenny Green and Mighty Mick and for me, it was fantastic to see both of them up on the Open Mic stage doing their thing and I especially enjoyed the impromptu version of “Blackbird” that Mick got me up on stage to do.

Kenny Green

Open Mics are always a lot of fun.

We also had some new faces participate as well. First of all we had Kaurna Cronin and his mate Banjo (that’s his name not an instrument) kicking off the evening with some very clever and witty songwriting by the pair of them

Kaurna Cronin

Banjo

Soon after Kaurna and Banjo we had a solo singer named Wendy Johnson do her thing with backing tracks on CD. To my surprise the backing tracks were of really good quality and Wendy did a wonderful job singing to it.

First SCALA Songwriters Workshop For 2011 – Tomorrow Night
Yes that’s right, tomorrow night marks the beginning of the SCALA Songwriter Workshop series for 2011.

For those of you that don’t know what happens at one of these workshops, the first half of the night deals with a special guest speaker or songwriter who will go through a specific topic of interest or, a song that they’ve been working on in detail.

The second half of the night is a more traditional songwriters circle where others can showcase a song for peer feedback.

The following comes from the SCALA Songwriters Workshop Facebook Page:

“This Tuesday, April 19, sees the return of the SCALA Songwriters’ Workshops. We have some great sessions planned for 2011 and the April workshop is bound to be a beauty.

Michael Heath (aka Fledderjohn) will be discussing his use of loops, not just as an aid to performance but also the valuable role they can play in the songwriting process. Many of us are solo artists and so it will be interesting to see how we can increase the number of layers of sound while we strive for chords, melody, arrangements, etc. If you are interested in adding new dimensions to your craft then this session is for you! Michael will be known to many of you from his recent SCALA gig as well as his occasional appearances at open mic nights.

The usual Songwriters’ Circle will follow Michael’s presentation, so please come along ready to give us a song. There will be a guitar available for use.”

It’s always a lot of fun and very informative too. For more information about the SCALA Songwriter Workshops go to the SCALA Website or, its Facebook Page
